How To: Apply for Medicare via Social Security

Medicare is our country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older. You’ll sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B through Social Security, so you can make both retirement and Medicare choices and withhold any premiums from your benefit payments.

Step 1

Go to https://secure.login.gov/

Your personal info will auto populate and will take up this whole screen. There are some questions you must answer at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2

This screen is where you tell SSA if you are only applying for Medicare OR are you applying for Medicare AND your monthly retirement cash benefit.

Step 3

********Now you will tell Medicare you want to apply for B, you will automatically be enrolled in A once application is complete.

Step 4

If you say no, it goes to the next screen.

If you say yes here is what you see:

Here's the details from More Info next to "What date did employment start?"

If you are still employed, mark the box “employment has not ended.”

Step 5

This section with the “Remarks Box” is where you put the date you want your Medicare Part B to start, if it is not the following month.

Example: If you are applying in April for May 1, you don’t need to write anything.

If you are applying in April for any date beyond May, you must write the start date you want in the “Remarks Box.”
